Lunch for One at Customs House Hotel, Hobart.

During a mid week getaway to Hobart to visit cousins, I dined at the Customs House Hotel. Though I opted to stay elsewhere due to a better deal I found online, the hotel’s intriguing history compelled me to explore it. With a rich past and undoubtedly fascinating stories to tell, it offered a glimpse into Hobart’s heritage, making for a memorable lunchtime experience.

The Georgian style hotel, built in 1846 at the corner of Murray and Morrison Streets, blends old-world charm with modern sophistication. Seeking warmth on a cold day, I enjoy a solo lunch. Although my friend couldn’t make it, the cozy interior and a delicious seafood chowder brighten my day.

The seafood chowder was a delightful indulgence, offering a rich and creamy texture that complemented the abundance of calamari and delicious pieces of salmon. The addition of toasted bread added a satisfying crunch and contrast to the creamy goodness of the chowder. It was a well rounded and comforting meal, perfect for a chilly day, leaving a lasting impression of flavours and textures that harmonised beautifully.

After lunch I headed to Salamanca Place. It’s a historic and vibrant waterfront precinct known for its rich heritage and lively atmosphere. Lined with 19th-century sandstone warehouses that have been transformed into shops, galleries, cafes, and restaurants, it’s a hub of cultural activity. The famous Salamanca Market, held every Saturday, draws visitors with its array of artisanal goods. The backdrop of Mount Wellington adds to its charm, making it a must visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
