Grapes on a Pizza? Cancino Restaurant, Mexico City.

I’m in Mexico City catching up with some dear friends Craig, his husband Jim and their friend Abraham. We had all arrived the evening before and after dinner and drinks, it was a late start the following day. We wander not far from our hotel and stumble across Cancino which serves a variety of pizza’s.

The four of us decide to share two salads and two pizzas. We discuss the age old debate of pineapple on a pizza and its three no’s against one yes, so we look for pizzas sans pineapple.

Cancino (Havre).

Cancino is a popular pizzeria in Mexico City known for its diverse and creative pizza offerings. With a variety of toppings and a relaxed ambiance, Cancino provides a unique dining experience. It’s a great spot to enjoy delicious pizzas and perhaps discover unexpected flavour combinations. Service is fun and friendly.

Mediterranean con quinoa MXN110

The quinoa salad with feta, tomato, and olives is a flavourful dish. While the feta adds a creamy and salty element that I enjoy, the olives were not to my liking. The diverse combination of quinoa, feta, and tomatoes provides a nutritious and hearty base,

Panzenella MXN130

The panzanella salad at the restaurant is incredibly fresh, as if just plucked from the garden. This vibrant Italian salad, featuring torn pieces of stale bread amid tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, red onion, and fresh basil, is truly delightful. The combination of flavours and textures makes it another refreshing dish all of us enjoy.

Prosciutto y arugula [prosciutto and rocket] MXN270

The arugula (rocket for us Aussies) and prosciutto pizza at Cancino is visually stunning and a packed with ingredients, although I find the balsamic overpowering, and there’s an abundance of arugula. Despite this, it remains a great pizza, thoroughly enjoyed by the boys.

Cuatro quesos {four cheese} MXN255

During a conversation, we unintentionally missed something on the menu for one of the pizzas. Despite my limited Spanish, where ‘cuarto quesos’ was familiar, I missed the words ‘uvas verdes’… The green grapes added a genuine surprise, especially alongside the gorgonzola cheese. This unexpected addition to the four cheese pizza turns out to make this pizza my favourite —coming from someone who dislikes pineapple on pizza, it’s a reminder that language barriers can lead to delightful surprises.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Cancino offers a tasty and enjoyable culinary adventure in the heart of Mexico City, and give a pizza with grapes a go…
