Trattoria Enzo e Piero, Florence, Italy.

After perusing the menu online, my choice is set, and I am looking forward to savouring the unique flavours of gnudi, kind of like a large gnocchi or dumpling . But when I order on this Friday evening, I am given a strange look….

It’s my birthday in Australia, not officially in Italy, but I decide to celebrate anyway at a local restaurant in Florence. A fellow traveller has told me about Trattoria Enzo e Piero which, incidentally, is only around 300 metres from my hotel. I am intrigued by their menu of traditional Italian fare, and it’s not all about pasta here.

Trattoria Enzo e Piero

Trattoria Enzo e Piero is a beautiful restaurant exuding old world Italian charm. Rustic yet timeless elegance graces the ambiance, capturing the essence of Italy. From classic decor with a warm atmosphere, it’s a place where the spirit of Italy comes alive, creating a memorable dining experience.

Trattoria Enzo e Piero

As the waiter takes my order, he enthusiastically emphasises the fresh fish, seafood pasta, and cuttlefish dishes. Despite his recommendations, I am here for the gnudi.

Bread with local olive oil and salt

A young waiter eagerly presents me with a plate of bread accompanied by ‘our local olive oil and salt’. As I indulge in this delightful combination, I express my appreciation with moans, acknowledging the exceptional taste of this simple yet delightful offering. Who knew bread, oil and salt can be so wonderful!

Vino della casa 500ml EUR6.5

You know me, I go for a wine, half a litre of the local house wine for EUR6.5, labelled ‘Trattoria Enzo e Piero’, it’s quite nice.

‘Gnudi’ Fatti in casa al tartufo fresco EUR16

The ‘Gnudi’, Fatti in casa al tartufo fresco, or home made ricotta and spinach dumplings with fresh truffle, is sheer bliss. Truffle, with its earthy flavour, unveils an additional delightful nuttiness in this dish when incorporated into the butter sauce. The overall composition resonates with richness and luxurious flavours, however, I don’t think my doctor would like me to eat this regularly!

The menu

I am still ready to try something else and thats when I notice the menu it states: According to tradition, we only serve fish dishes on Friday and Saturday… Opps… my bad, It’s Friday, looks like seafood is in order next….So, I order what my seat neighbour is having as it looks good, from a distance.

Seppie Inzimino EUR13

Intrigued by his choice, I point and order the same dish, ‘seppie in zimino’ —cuttlefish with chard. While it looks like cats vomit, it’s not too bad. The cuttlefish is soft, not chewy and the chard not bitter. The dish boasts a potent marsala flavour that, despite its intensity, proves to be delicious and satisfying, albeit repeating on me for the rest of the night (cat like).

… a second bottle of vino della casa 500ml EUR6.5

I decide to indulge in a second 500ml bottle of wine, not a surprising feat for those who know me well. Despite the challenge, I manage to finish it—after all, it’s my birthday! Cheers to me, celebrating and enjoying the moment to the fullest and indulging in some of the best Florentine food, including seafood on a Friday…
