My friend Shanny, who I’ve known for over 30 years, and I both needed a little getaway. With a few days off, we decided on a short escape to the New South Wales (NSW) South Coast—not too far from my home in Sydney and hers in Wollongong.

We decided to spend one night in Gerroa and another in Huskisson, making a few delicious stops along the way.

Our first stop is in Kiama, a charming coastal town best known for its famous blowhole. This natural wonder is a must see, drawing visitors to witness the dramatic bursts of water through the natural sea cave, made of volcanic rock, where waves force water through the narrow opening.

The blowhole sits on the headland right beside the lighthouse, an iconic Kiama spot. As I lined up the perfect photo, a tourist stepped right in front of me—classic! I couldn’t help but laugh, thinking “tourists…” all while being one myself, and of course, a tour guide by trade.

Standing proudly on Blowhole Point, Kiama Lighthouse has guided ships since 1887. Perched beside the famous blowhole, it offers sweeping coastal views and a glimpse into Kiama’s maritime past, making it a popular stop for visitors exploring this charming seaside town.

We stop for lunch at the Kiama Pie Shop. Shanny orders the off-menu special, the famous Blowhole Pie. It’s a classic meat pie topped with mushy peas and smothered in gravy, practically a full meal on its own. She absolutely loves it!

I’m not really in the mood for pie, so I opt for one of their roasted pork with crackling bánh mì’s instead. The flavours are fantastic, though it falls apart a little. I only manage to finish half of it before the seagulls swoop in.

We book a cabin at Discovery Parks Gerroa, a two bedroom deluxe, and it turns out to be fantastic—modern, comfortable, and equipped with all the mod cons. It’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind for the night.

It’s located on the Crooked River, which while looking a little muddy is teeming with bird life. We joke about how as we are getting older we are suddenly becoming bird watchers…

Although I’m starting to think Shanny might be a bird whisperer… she has this uncanny ability to attract birds right to her. No food involved, they just seem to want to be near her. Uncanny, Shanny!

Shanny, like me, is a seafood lover, so earlier in Kiama we grabbed some fresh Australian Tiger Prawns and smoked salmon. Tonight’s dinner was simple yet perfect, paired with baby spinach, rocket, a squeeze of lemon, and a side of Marie Rose sauce. Light, easy, and incredibly tasty.

The next morning we head to Seven Mile Beach , and yes it is seven miles long… very imaginatively named! It’s a breathtaking stretch of golden sand backed by fantastic Aussie bushland.

Perfect for swimming, surfing, walking, or simply relaxing, it’s a natural paradise offering endless views and coastal beauty just minutes from Kiama and Gerroa.

After spending the night in Huskisson, we make our way to the Huskisson Hotel for brunch. This iconic coastal pub, renowned for its stunning waterfront views and relaxed atmosphere, offers hearty meals and a true taste of Jervis Bay hospitality.

I order the BLT which is not only tasty but quite filling! Plenty of perfectly cooked bacon, thick tomato slices, the only thing I wish I had added on was cheese, I’m a fiend for cheese with bacon!

Shanny goes for the super good looking pancakes topped with fresh strawberries, honey and cream with candied walnuts. I nab a bite and the pancakes are nice and fluffy.

Huskisson, charms with white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, dolphin cruises, and a laid back coastal vibe, making it a perfect getaway for relaxation and seaside adventures. I say, go visit for a weekend here, you won’t regret it.
