Introduction

After a tumultuous journey from Segovia to Madrid-Barajas Airport, involving multiple modes of transport, including a somewhat lost Uber, I finally arrived. While in the Uber, I decided to check in online and was presented with a EUR60 upgrade offer from Iberia. I couldn’t resist the temptation to splurge, even for a brief 50-minute flight. After all, I thought, I’m on vacation, and a touch of luxury can make the journey all the more enjoyable. It’s those spontaneous indulgences that often add a special flavour to travel experiences.

Check in

Despite a dedicated business class check-in area, it appeared there was a bottleneck with only two staff members assisting a line of around 10-12 passengers. To expedite the process, a passing staff member directed me to a self-service kiosk for printing baggage labels. I then proceeded to the bag drop section, streamlining the check-in process. Phew. It gave me time more time in the lounge.

Next, due to travelling business class I enjoyed a smooth experience with fast track access through security, where I had the screening area all to myself.

Sala Club Lounge

The Iberia Airlines Sala Club Lounge at Madrid Airport, the airlines flagship lounge, offers a haven of comfort and relaxation for travellers. With stylish and modern decor, it provides a tranquil escape from the bustling terminal. High-speed Wi-Fi keeps you connected, while charging stations ensure your devices are powered up. The lounge also features showers for a quick refresh before your flight. Overall, it’s a welcoming space where you can unwind and recharge, making your travel experience more enjoyable and stress-free. Food and drinks abound…

The novel spaceship design above the food stations, though not typical of Madrid’s style, complements the lounge’s passenger dynamics. It adds a unique touch to the ambiance, enhancing the overall experience for travellers.

Amenities include comfortable seating, a buffet offering a range of refreshments, including Spanish culinary delights, and a well-stocked bar. Unable to find wine, I opt for a local beer and relish classic Spanish dishes: fried chorizo, ham and cheese croquettes, and a unique twist on potatas bravas with a creamy, smoky sauce instead of the traditional spicy tomato. I totally prefer this version from the spice one I had on the Madrid food tour. Finally, when I spied some other passengers sipping on wine, I asked and they directed me to a complete wine bar within the lounge I had obviously missed!

The wine bar was unmanned and self-service style. I wondered if when it is busier, such as weekends, whether the area is staffed.

What was really cool was the self service wine bar which was almost like a soft drink vending machine! Choose your wine and the size and press the button – your drink is served!

I stop by the food station again and collect some salads which go well with my refreshing glass of Verdejo, a classic Spanish white wine.

The Aircraft

On this particular route, Iberia use the Airbus a319, a narrow-body aircraft known for its use on short to medium haul routes. The aircraft, registered EC-JEI, is an almost 19 year old who seats 14 passengers in business and 108 in economy.

The Airbus A319, not the smallest in the Airbus family (a title held by the A318), but is a striking “babybus.” A member of the a320 family, the a319s wingspan is wider than the aircraft’s overall length which is quite unusual.

The Seat

The Iberia business class seat on the Airbus a319 provided a cozy and comfortable onboard experience. The snug seating arrangement offered a more intimate and relaxing atmosphere for this short sector. OK, thats all fancy talk for the seats being same as economy but with the middle seat blocked off. I ended up having the row to myself so there still was a bit of room.

Service

I was offered a delightful tapas plate featuring two types of Manchego cheese, Iberico Jamon, and olives, creating a typical Spanish combination. When it came to choosing a white wine, I couldn’t resist asking for both options, playfully declaring “this one for later”. My cheeky comment elicited laughter from the crew, and with a smile, they continued with their tasks, leaving me to savour the delightful spread and a selection of wine, enjoying a moment of playful indulgence during the flight.

The cheese was a delight, even without utensils, which prompted me to take bites. As a bonus, a basket with an array of crisps and nuts was offered, and I couldn’t resist grabbing a few packets to complement the cheese, creating a satisfying and varied onboard snack.

Entertainment

Despite the lack of in-flight entertainment on this short Airbus a319 flight, it was perfectly acceptable given the brief duration. A notable feature, a coat hook, caught my attention, and I thought it might be something Jayden Wong, one of my favourite vloggers, would appreciate, adding a touch of practicality to the flight experience.

Conclusion

The Business Class splurge for this flight, though unnecessary as I could have comfortably flown economy, was a delightful indulgence. The lounge’s food and drink offerings likely saved on airport costs, enhancing the overall experience. Reflecting on it, there’s no regret about the paid upgrade; it added a touch of luxury and enjoyment to the journey.
