Dining at Plattesteen: A Belgian Bistro Experience

While exploring northern Belgium on our road trip, we visit the capital Brussels and my friend Brett takes me to this wonderful bistro Plattesteen. It serves an array of French cuisine and believe me the dishes we try are delicious!

Plattesteen.

Located at the corner of rue du Marché au Charbon and rue du Plattesteen, this brasserie restaurant is a favourite among Brussels locals. Since 1936, it has occupied the first floor of an art-deco building. Renowned artists like Edith Piaf and David Bowie have dined here, and its lively terrace is a central Saint-Jacques hotspot.

Baguette and Rochefort butter.

As soon as we place our order, we are brought some wonderful slices of baguette. Crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside it pairs well with the smooth local Rochefort butter which hails from the northern parts of Belgium.

Terrine de Campagne (Country Terrine)  € 13.50.

We decide to share meals and start with the Terrine de Campagne which is a traditional French country pâté, typically made with a coarse mixture of pork, liver, and spices, including herbs like thyme and bay leaves. It’s baked in a terrine dish and then served cold, offering a rustic and flavourful appetiser perfect for spreading on that crusty yet soft bread. It is hearty and filling and absolutely divine.

Vol-au-vent frites (Vol-au-vent with fries)  €19.00

The vol-au-vent doesn’t present as we expected, but it is absolutely delicious. The filling is rich and velvety, with large pieces of tender chicken and mushrooms, making it a delightful dish despite its unusual appearance. It is also the perfect dish to dip those golden fries into…

Frites (Fries).

Belgian fries, or frites, are crispy and golden, known for being double fried for extra crunch. Traditionally served in a paper cone, they are often paired with a variety of sauces such as mayonnaise or mustard, making them a beloved snack in Belgium and this serving does them justice. Delicious!

We thoroughly enjoyed this meal. If you’re in Brussels head to Plattesteen!
