Welcome back for another Macca’s post from around the world! This time I am in The Netherlands! The usual rules apply: I’ll try a burger that is not available in Australia and I’ll have fries for comparison; if there is something else quite different on the menu, like gazpacho in Spain, or the Kaprao Crispy Chicken and Rice & the Samurai Burger in Thailand, I’ll grab that too. Today I am trying the a McKroket, some vegetarian nuggets alongside a serve of regular fries from McDonalds in The Netherlands.

Krokets (or croquettes in English) are enjoyed across the Netherlands as a tasty treat, often served with mustard for dipping. But let’s also talk about fries, or frites as called in Dutch. Frites are found throughout the Netherlands and neighbouring countries as a tasty street snack often served with a side of fritessaus.

Krokets are beloved in Dutch cuisine. These deep fried snacks are typically made with a mixture of meat (often beef or veal) and a thick potato and gravy like filling, which is then coated in breadcrumbs and fried until crispy.

The McKroket is a unique menu item offered by McDonald’s in the Netherlands. Above is the advertised burger, when served it looks like…

…..this! Not too bad of a job! The McKroket consists of a burger bun filled with a deep fried beef ragout patty, which is then topped with mustard sauce.

You want my honest opinion? It doesn’t work for me. The texture of the Mckroket’s inner patty doesn’t meet my expectations, and is a bit sloppy yet still dry. Additionally, there’s too much bun and crumb, which feels like a carb overload. As I consider what needs changing, I would say a big slab of American cheese on top!

The nuggets taste like chicken, but the rubbery texture is slightly different from traditional chicken nuggets. While I managed to finish a couple, they didn’t quite meet my expectations. They paired well with curry sauce, but I’m not sure if I’d order them again.

Now onto the fries! They are fresh and piping hot, tasty, and perfectly salted, making them quite satisfying. I also love the serve of ‘fritessaus’ (fries sauce) which almost has the flavour of Big Mac sauce crossed with a tartare sauce… I love the fritessaus for fries! Oh yes indeed!
McDonalds in The Hague, Netherlands, wonderfully cooked, good service and great condiments (seriously that fritessaus!!), the fries were outstanding but I guess I’d need to be Dutch to understand and appreciate the McKroket…

well yes to the sauce in that case:) But no to the fake nuggets. I don’t know why they bother! I remember when we were in Holland years ago, they had Indonesian foods in McDonalds. Of course, having been a Dutch colony…

I feel that way about most nuggets I’ve tried. I’d like them to taste like chicken but they never quite do? It’s weird!
