Betty’s has quickly become one of my favourite burger spots in Australia. Betty’s Burgers, founded in 2014 in Noosa, Queensland, is an Australian fast / casual burger chain which boasts over 60 stores nationwide. The burgers are consistently delicious, and the sides offer something a little different from what you’ll find at other burger chains, think frickles and calamari. There are the usual drink suspects of soft drinks and shakes plus there is the added bonus of beers, ciders and wines on offer.

I only discovered how good Betty’s Burgers was about two years ago, when family from Canada visited Sydney. While taking my 11 year old nephew and his eight year old sister to Luna Park, and knowing his love of burgers (what 11-year-old, or big kid like me, doesn’t?), we stopped for a pre–fun park dinner at Betty’s in Circular Quay.

My favourite is the Betty’s Burger Classic, a smashed beef patty with cheese, tomato, onion, and crisp coral lettuce, all topped with Betty’s special sauce. The bun is soft yet toasted, and the patty is juicy with those perfectly charred edges that add so much flavour.

The Crispy Chicken Strips Burger is also a hit, but not as grreat as the beef. I’m not sure if it was the heavy garlic aioli or the seasoning in the chicken’s crumbing, but the flavours didn’t quite come together for me this time. Still, it might work for you and it’s a bargain at $9,90.

Of course, no burger is complete without some sides! Two of my favourites are the frickles, those crispy fried pickles, and, naturally, a classic serving of chips.

I’m usually not a fan of chips or fries with a bit of potato skin left on, but these are an exception. Crispy, perfectly cooked, and seasoned just right. Simple yet delicious, they hit the spot without being overdone.

The frickles at Betty’s Burgers are a must try! Not something often found served in Australia, these crispy, golden fried pickles strike the perfect balance between tangy and crunchy, an addictive little side you’ll probably keep reaching for, like I did.

If you’re after something a little different to go with your burgers, try the calamari bucket. Calamari can be hit or miss, sometimes over seasoned, other times undercooked, but not here. These were perfectly plump and juicy, with an old-school, lightly salted crumb that was simply delicious.
Oh and what did my nephew, the burger lover, think when I asked him his thoughts? “It was ok…” I looked at him wide eyed, he giggled and said, in his broad Canadian accent, “It was the best Uncle Matty!”
