“Is that all you do on holidays just fly from here to there then every few days take other flight somewhere?” a friend said to me the other day with a grin.
“No……., I eat as well” I replied with a cheekier grin.
Jalan Alor, or as I’ve heard it called eat street, is one of my favourite food destinations. I first discovered it in 2009 on a stopover in KL as my hotel was located at the end of the street. On my second brief visit to the city earlier this year, I stayed a few streets away but on an afternoon stroll stumbled across it and sat there in the afternoon enjoying a Tiger Beer. On my most recent trip overseas, I’d flown Air Asia X and thus had had a transit in Kuala Lumpur so I stopped at that hotel at the end of the street to again enjoy Jalan Alor.

Jalan Alor, usually quiet in the daytime, comes alive as the sun goes down and the temperatuire cools and the tables are brought out in front of the restaurants on one side and the street vendors set up on the other.

The street vendors, their carts filled to the brim with sticks of everything, were a newish addition to the street, I don’t remember seeing the previousy. The carts had a delightful array of fresh food – most types of meats, seafood and vegetables on a stick as well as some unrecognisable pieces of stabbed flesh on display, ready for the steamer, boiler or fryer.

Some may find the staff or touts with menus out the front a hindrance but for me it helped as I checked out several menus, each offering something special or different from the next, I finally took at seat at Restoran Sai Woo.

Everything I ordered was delicious! The beef and satay sticks had that yummy smokey charred flavour from the hot coals – now I love chicken, but the beef was the winner here. The Nasi Lemak, the national dish of Malaysia, was lovely with each part of the dish retaining its own distinct flavour. My favorite though, was the deep fried whole fish. so crispy on the outside and moist inside I could have eaten a dozen of them!
If you find yourself in Kuala Lumpur, make a bee line for eat street – Jalan Alor before flying off somewhere else 😉
Hehe remember that day when we madly raced around Saigon looking for street food? Ahh memories!!! 😀
Do I ever that chicken dish was to die for! When are you going to make it?
