Oh Vienna! Schönbrunn Palace and Lunch at Figlmüller – The Home of Schnitzel since 1905!

Vienna’s grandeur is indeed unforgettable, evoking the majesty of its imperial past. From its wide boulevards to its magnificent buildings, the city resonates with the legacy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It’s a place where history and beauty converge, leaving an indelible impression on all who visit. The whole time I am here, I have the song Vienna by Ultravox playing in my head – Oh Vienna!

Schönbrunn Palace.

Schönbrunn Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Once the summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs, it features lavish gardens and opulent interiors. Today, it welcomes visitors to explore its grand halls, royal apartments, and beautifully landscaped grounds, offering a glimpse into Austria’s imperial past. I didn’t snap pics in every room, I thought it was off limits until realising it was using a flash that wasn’t allowed.

Vieux Laque Room

One of my favourite rooms is the Vieux Laque Room. It is a remarkable chamber within the palace, known for its exquisite lacquered walls from China with intricate detailing, showcasing the palace’s grandeur and historical richness.

The Great Gallery

But the most famous room may be the Great Gallery. It is a magnificent hall renowned for its grandeur and opulence. Adorned with intricate decorations and stunning artwork, it served as a prestigious venue for royal events and gatherings during the Habsburg era.

Schoenbrunn Palace

As I leave the stunning Schönbrunn Palace I call an Uber to take me to Figlmüller’s (no I didn’t take a horse and cart!) I pop the address into the app and remember there are two restaurants, so I check my booking as to which restaurant it is and BAM! I realise the booking was for the day before! I am slightly freaking out as I have wanted to visit this restaurant for years!

Figlmüller Bäckerstraße, Vienna.

I quickly attempt to make another booking online while in the Uber, but there was no availability until after I had left Vienna. I decided to wing it and see if I can get a table for one. I’m in luck and after only a ten minute wait I have a table. There are two locations of this restaurant, Wollzeile, the main and larger restaurant and Bäckerstraße, just around the corner.

Figlmüller Bäckerstraße, Vienna.

Figlmüller, a renowned Viennese restaurant located in Austria, is famous for its schnitzels, particularly the Pork schnitzel. The history of Figlmüller’s schnitzel dates back to the early 20th century when the restaurant was founded by Johann Figlmüller in 1905. The recipe for their schnitzel has been passed down through generations and remains a closely guarded secret. Figlmüller is credited with popularising this dish and is often regarded as one of the best places to enjoy schnitzels in Vienna.

The restaurant’s schnitzel became famous for its large size and thinness, as well as its delicious flavour and crispy texture. The schnitzel is larger than the plate, leaving me wondering how I’ll manage to finish it all. It’s a delicious challenge I’m eager to tackle. As a side, and there are many to choose from, I opt for the traditional potato-field salad made with pumpkin seed oil.

Ok so I am going to be honest here, at first I wasn’t a fan of the potato-field salad made with pumpkin seed oil, that was until I mixed the balsamic at the bottom of the bowl into the dressing, and it suddenly took on a completely different flavour. The dish complimented the schnitzel perfectly and I understand now why these are both the most popular dishes here at Figlmüller.

It has been tradition since 1905 to that the schnitzel should be served larger than the plate….there is a plate hiding under that lovely golden fried schitty which is served with just a simple lemon wedge. The Schnitzel literally melts in your mouth. There is no overpowering herbs or spices (or gimmicks) used in the crumbing, its pure and simple old school fine breadcrumbs.

Achieving a perfect schnitzel involves a delicate balance. Pounding the meat very thin helps tenderise it and ensures even cooking. Additionally, allowing air between the crumbing and the meat helps create a crispy crust while preventing the schnitzel from becoming soggy. This technique contributes to the Figlmüller schnitzel’s signature texture and flavour,

I get about half way through, there is no way I am going to finish this here! So I am handed a paper bag with greaseproof paper to wrap this beauty up and take away. The left over schnitzel becomes the perfect late night sandwich (on a kaiser roll… pun intended) back at the hotel. Thank goodness I got to visit after my date mistake! And, I don’t think I can ever look at a preformed supermarket schnitzel again!

Oh Vienna!
